Le Cordon Bleu: Let the games begin!
Although the last six weeks were great, I am finally where I want to be. Starting my second rotation, I am in the kitchen baking. On Monday, our new instructor showed us how to make chocolate chip cookies and explained all the how’s and why’s. On Tuesday, we were in the kitchen making them ourselves. Next Monday, we have to produce them again, however, with no instructions from anyone. If you’re thinking what’s the big deal, it’s just a cookie, then let me explain…
The Sugar Cookie Upgraded and Grown Up
I’m pretty sure that the sugar cookie is loved by just about everyone and one doesn’t outgrow them, just like Cheerios. They can be kind of plain though and so when the Holidays come around, there are ways to dress up the classic goodness with special charms of the season.
One of the versions that I tried this past Christmas, was the filled sandwich version. After the cookies are baked, you can fill them with pretty much anything that you personally find appetizing. For one batch, I decided to use homemade apricot preserves. First, a great way to keep the filling in the cookie, a line of royal icing drawn on one of the cookies will help to keep the filling neatly inside.
Don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun with different designs and flavors. The traditional sugar cookie is like a bland canvas waiting for your creativity, or at least the ability to copy someone else and can be adapted for every holiday and occasion.
How Savory Is the Cravory?
The Cravory, a bakery located in San Diego, CA, serving up cookies that are appropriately titled,’From Sweet to Savory’, caught my eye this morning while connecting at New York City’s LGA airport. As you stand in line to pay for your food, treats galore tempt you from both directions. Not usually drawn in by such ploys, I noticed a cookie named “Pancakes & Bacon”. Next to it, Lemon Cherry Basil! Really?
